Do I Need Ligament Repair Surgery?
Surgery is often used for the treatment of a variety of ligament injuries. While non-surgical treatments are often attempted for initial treatment, there are situations where surgery becomes the recommended or necessary treatment. The need for surgery depends on the activity of the patient and the demands the individual needs to put on his/her knee. If you have a sedentary life you may be able to manage. However, recurrent falls or instabilities may make you vulnerable to early degeneration of the knee, and in such situations it is wise to see Dr. Vinay so he can examine you and determine if surgery is necessary.
There are four ligaments in the knee that are prone to injury:
1) Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
The ACL is one of the two major ligaments in the knee, connecting the thigh bone to the shin bone.
2) Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)
The PCL is the second major ligament in the knee connecting the thigh bone to the shine bone.
3) Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL)
The LCL connects the thigh bone to the fibula, the smaller bone of the lower leg on the lateral or outer side of the knee.
4) Medical Collateral Ligament (MCL)
The MCL also connects the thigh bone to the shin bone on the medical or inside of the knee.
Ligament Injury Treatment
Almost all ligament injuries are a result of sudden movement that strains the knee, but the specific treatment of the injury is determined by a number of factors:
– Your age
– Extent of the injury
– Your tolerance for specific medications
– Expectations for the course of the injury
– Your opinion/preference
– Your tolerance for certain procedures
